VMS students have been striving for excellence as they demonstrate their mastery of important vocabulary words in each subject area. Students have increased their focus on learning the definitions of important terminology in each subject. This increased vocabulary focus includes a quiz at the end of each school week that measures student understanding of new and important vocabulary words.
Homerooms have engaged in friendly competition, with top-scoring homerooms earning bragging rights, front-of-lunch line privileges, and a group photo featured on the Olympics-themed bulletin boards located in the foyers of the first and second floors. Students have been studying their vocabulary words during class time, and are also able to review the terms and definitions that are posted in each grade's hallway.
This vocabulary competition was developed by VMS staff to help students take ownership of their learning. The mastery of vocabulary also gives our students an important role in achieving our building and district's Wildly Important Goal (WIG), which is to decrease the amount of students not proficient in Reading/ELA. The vocabulary terms change each week to reflect the academic focus of each week's learning goals in each subject. Students have been motivated by the clear goals of this initiative and energized by the friendly competition!
