Young Women in STEM

The Collins Aerospace Young Women in STEM event is designed to inspire 8th grade girls to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. And this year's event did not disappoint!

MHSAP 8th grade young ladies had the opportunity to attend the day-long event held on Tuesday, February 28 at the Collins Aerospace campus in Cedar Rapids.

Highlights included:
• building a working prosthetic hand which will be given to a person in need
• programming and flying drones
• using LED lights and sound boards to wire a greeting card
• using VR software
• chatting with one of the engineers for NASA's space suits

The girls also toured the labs, tried out a flight simulator and fighter pilot helmet, and performed a variety of science experiments. (The pictures show a platform the ladies made with paper cups which was strong enough for 3 of them to stand on, the flying a drone they programmed, and the prosthetic hand they built, too.)

It was an awesome, inspirational day! Thanks Collins Aerospace for the opportunity!
