Library Coding

In library class, students are learning much more than how to find a good book! Through engaging library stations, first and second-grade students are developing essential library skills while also exploring coding and computer science.

At Station One, students use coding apps Rodo Codo or Bee-Bot to practice sequencing and problem-solving skills. “Pair programming,” where two students share one device, helps build communication and collaboration.

At Station Two, first graders practice reading code by making predictions and then programming Bee-Bots to follow a prewritten algorithm. Second graders extend their learning about fiction and nonfiction by reading short book descriptions, deciding whether each is fiction or nonfiction, and then coding the Bee-Bot to move to the correct section on the mat.

At Station Three, students learn that books are organized alphabetically by the author’s last name. To strengthen their alphabetizing skills, students use blocks, beads, buttons, or cups to arrange the alphabet in order. Second graders also have the option to play an online “shelver” game where they practice putting books in order.

Through these hands-on stations, students are not only learning how to navigate the library but also developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Our young readers are becoming confident coders and library explorers—ready to take on both books and bots!
