As we begin summer, we want to take a moment to celebrate our end-of-year literacy assessments. As a building, we reached 80% of students at or above benchmark and those results are worth cheering for! Check out our students celebrating by ringing the bell and signing the board here!
From mastering the alphabet, learning sight words, and becoming fluent readers the growth we have seen across the building is truly remarkable. These assessments aren't just scores—they are a reflection of the hard work, curiosity, and "aha!" moments our students have experienced every day in the classroom. We are so proud of our young readers!
Keep the Adventure Alive: Why Summer Reading Matters
While summer is a well-deserved break for our hard-working students, it is also the perfect time to protect those hard-earned gains. As we have said all year, At Longfellow, we read for 20 minutes a day!
Avoiding the "Summer Slide"
You might have heard of the "summer slide." The summer slide refers to the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the school year.
For our K-2 learners, this is a critical time for "learning to read" so they can eventually "read to learn." Even just 20 minutes a day of reading can prevent learning loss and ensure your child starts the next grade feeling confident and ready.
Making Reading Fun (Not a Chore!)
Summer reading shouldn't feel like homework. Here are a few ways to keep the excitement going:
Let Them Choose: Whether it’s a graphic novel, a book about dinosaurs, or a cereal box, let your child pick what interests them.
The "Read-Aloud" Magic: Even if your child can read on their own, they still love being read to! It helps build their vocabulary and listening skills.
Reading on the Go: Bring books to the park, the pool, or on long car rides.
Visit the Library: Our local libraries have wonderful summer reading programs with prizes and other fun events.
We are so proud of the progress our students have made this year. Let’s keep the Longfellow spirit going all summer long.
Happy Reading!
