time telling

Our second graders have been hard at work mastering the important skill of telling time on analog clocks. Recently, students have focused on reading clocks to the hour, half-hour, and five-minute intervals. These foundational skills help build confidence in understanding daily schedules, planning routines, and recognizing the passage of time.

To support their learning, students participated in hands-on activities using practice clocks and time-reading cards. These tools allowed them to manipulate the clock hands, visualize different times, and check their understanding in real time. The use of concrete materials helped make an abstract concept more accessible and engaging.

Collaboration played a major role in the week’s learning. Students worked together in pairs and small groups, taking turns reading times, adjusting clock hands, and explaining their reasoning. By discussing their strategies with peers, they strengthened their understanding and developed important communication skills.

One of the highlights of the week was watching students quiz one another. Many took on the role of “time teacher,” giving classmates a challenge and offering clues or guidance when needed. Their willingness to help each other when stuck demonstrated empathy, patience, and strong teamwork—skills that extend far beyond math class.

We are so proud of the effort and enthusiasm our second graders showed throughout this learning experience. Their curiosity, collaboration, and commitment to becoming confident time-tellers were evident in every activity. We look forward to continuing to build on these skills as the year progresses!
