Parkview 1st graders recently reached for the stars as they completed their Knowledge Unit on Astronomy. Throughout the unit, students explored fascinating aspects of our solar system, including the eight planets that orbit the sun, and discovered that one full orbit of the Earth around the sun equals 365 days. They also delved into the phases of the moon, learning how it changes shape in the night sky, and explored the exciting history of space exploration, including the Space Race and humanity’s journey to the moon.

To wrap up their learning, students participated in a hands-on, creative project: designing their very own space scenes. Each student chose to feature Earth or another planet of their choice, and added an astronaut (complete with a self-portrait) to represent themselves in space. This activity gave students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge while expressing their creativity and imagination, imagining what it would be like to explore the cosmos firsthand.

Through this unit, our first graders not only learned key facts about astronomy but also developed curiosity, problem-solving skills, and an appreciation for the wonders of the universe. We are so proud of their hard work and enthusiasm as they continue to explore the world—and beyond!
