Covid Update

MISD Families,

Over the past few days the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and Linn County Public Health (IDPH) have issued separate and conflicting guidance regarding mask wearing in schools. Upon careful consideration of the varied guidance, given the short number of days remaining (17), and recognizing that most students are unvaccinated at this time, MISD will continue to require masks for the remainder of the school year (until June 11) for indoor events and activities. Masks will be optional for outdoor activities to include recess and extracurricular activities.

Beginning June 14, we will transition to optional masks for indoor and outdoor activities to include summer school programming, while monitoring our COVID data as we make this transition. Given the smaller student numbers during summer school, increased distancing is possible and better allows a safe transition and adjustment to our mitigation efforts.

We recognize this decision will make some happy and others unhappy.  Providing a safe learning environment has been and continues to be a priority. Your continued understanding and patience is appreciated as we strive to best meet the needs of our students and families.

Sincerely,

Janelle Brouwer, Superintendent
