VMS staff put together a wildly successful 5/6th grade Halloween mixer- they provided the music, concessions, games and contests. Our students came with amazing costumes, great dance moves, and enough energy to ensure that everyone slept well that night. #vmsinspire

To celebrate the end of a successful first quarter, 6th graders had some fun team building minute-to-win-it games.

VMS has started a fundraiser selling shirts to our families. The goal is to raise funds for PBIS events throughout the year - catching the kids who are doing the right thing and rewarding them.
The store is live at: https://www.iowasignshop.com/vernonms. You may place orders through November 6th with an estimated return date of November 22nd. When looking at the shirts, please move your mouse over each clothing article to see the back side.
Mrs. Hale is incredibly grateful to her 6th grade Advisory students who are helping her get the set ready for our school musical!

Students in Mrs. Knudson’s 6th grade science classes are exploring bacteria, fungi, and archaea to discover which group is most like a middle school student. Students hunted for bacteria that may exist in the classroom and inoculated an agar plate to see if bacteria will grow. Students also inoculated bread and set up mushrooms to view the spore prints in a few days.

Thank you to all the volunteers that came to Vernon today to read for America Reads Day!!

Please welcome our new 5-8 computer science teacher, Mark Kenny. He is originally from Akron, Iowa. This is the start of his 24th year of teaching. He has spent most of his career teaching math and science at the middle school level. He went to college at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. He obtained his K-12 Curriculum and Instruction Master's Degree online from Nova Southeastern University based in Florida.
He went into teaching because he loves working with kids. He loves seeing the look on their faces when they actual "get it". He loves seeing kids laugh and having a good time while they learn. He chose to work at a middle school because he loves everything that goes with middle school. He loves the drama, the struggles, and the roller coaster of emotions that go with being a middle school student.
Tell us a little about yourself: My wife and I together have seven children. She has a girl and two boys and I have four beautiful girls. I love to workout and to play golf. I referee football and I am also an accomplished wrestling official.
Fun Fact:
1--This summer my family and I took a 24-hour train ride to Whitefish, Montana to visit my grandmother.
2--I buy gum by the box and I have to have music playing while I workout.

In Social Studies, Mr. Norton’s 5th grade students were sharing and discovering information on the Native Americans of the Great Plains. The students in his Literacy classes were collaborating on one of their first RACE Responses so they can have quality responses to a question.

Mrs. Wolfe-Kerker’s advisory group tested their ingenuity this morning by making unique paper airplanes, and testing them in flight. #vmsinspire
