Students in Mr. Stearns' 7th grade math classes are learning about integers, integer value, and combining integers through the game of Integer Football. Students had to roll dice and combine their values (each color represented a direction to move) to try and score! This helps students begin to conceptualize how they will add and subtract integers for real! #vmsinspire

Mrs. Hale’s 6th grade artists are studying color schemes- how they affect our opinions and purchasing decisions, and what that might say about our personalities. They each picked a specific color scheme to put on a basketball shoe, and laid them out to display. Then artists decided what shoe they would buy if it were in a store. #vmsinspire

Happy 🌎 Down Syndrome Day!

Last week 7th grade Social Studies students played World Landmark Bingo with our Coe College Practicum teacher, Mr. Thoma. They were given two clues and called on if they knew the landmark. #vmsinspire

Students in Mrs. Jones' 7th grade social studies classes completed research about World Heritage Sites and Famous World Landmarks in Social Studies. Digital resources in Classlink like Britannica Online, Gale, and Explora Middle answered student-generated questions. Each student created a poster about their project and used talking points from Mr. Hahn, Vernon Middle School's instructional coach, to show and share. #vmsinspire

Due to the weather, Marion ISD will be running a 2 hour EARLY DISMISSAL today, March 9th. No evening activities, no PM preschool.

A huge thanks to all the volunteers that came to Vernon to speak to our 5th and 6th graders about careers yesterday! #vmsinspire

Congratulations to the VMS Jazz Band for earning a Superior rating at the NEIBA Jazz Festival on Saturday! Two students from our band also received "Outstanding Soloist" awards. Congratulations to Ari G. for his vibraphone solo and Abram B. for being named the overall "Outstanding Soloist" for the festival on trumpet/flugelhorn. Way to go, VMS Jazz Band! #vmsinspire

Please welcome our new 5th grade literacy/social studies teacher, Will Norton. He graduated from Mount Mercy College. He decided to go into teaching because he always enjoyed working with kids. An opportunity in high school to help with the basketball youth camp was when he first thought teaching might be a good option. He has taught for 16 years at a variety of different grade levels ranging from 2nd-8th. He chose to work at a middle school because middle school is an influential time and he feels like teachers can have a significant impact on student success and he loves to see kids grow.
He’s been married for 11 years and has a 1 year old daughter. He also coaches volleyball at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School. He grew up on a dairy farm and he show cows at the Iowa State Fair.

What do you do when the power goes out right before school starts and buses have already dropped off students? Get out basketballs and chess boards or have some good conversations!

MISD Bands presented their annual Parade of Bands Concert on Tuesday evening, featuring the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, and High School Bands, as well as a combined performance by all bands at the end of the concert. Students in Mr. Vanderhei's 7th grade literacy classes are starting a Public Speaking Unit. One activity that they do at the beginning is an impromptu speech game. The students pick a topic out of a bowl and talk for 30 seconds on that topic. The goal is not to use or have more than three 'umm's", "like's", or long pauses. It's a fun way to work on avoiding verbal fillers while public speaking.
