Over the course of the past few weeks, two Marion High School teachers were awarded prestigious awards for their commitment to the classroom and the students at MHS.
In November, social studies teacher Jonathan Mitchell was awarded by the Daughters of the American Revolution as an Outstanding Teacher of American History for the state of Iowa. Of the numerous teachers nominated throughout the state, Mr. Mitchell prevailed as Iowa’s representative. For years, as an American Government teacher, Mr. Mitchell has organized a school-wide Constitution Week celebration filled with activities, trivia, prizes, and student-led speeches on the history and significance of our country’s most important document. Last year, as an election year, Mr. Mitchell worked tirelessly between numerous buildings, getting over 90% of our senior class to register to vote, and because of this, he was awarded the Carrie Chapman Catt Award. He has led countless field trips to places in our community that students normally may not be able to experience, including the federal courthouse, the Czech Museum, Naturalization ceremonies, and even was in attendance with students when the Czech and Slovak presidents visited Cedar Rapids. He will receive his award in Des Moines at the state conference in April. Mr. Mitchell will then represent Iowa in the national contest.
Along with Mr. Mitchell, this past weekend, Mr. Logan Vander Weil was selected to receive the Phillip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award from the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association. Mr. Vander Weil has been the band director at Marion High School for 7 years. Last weekend, Mr. Vander Weil was honored at the annual honor band festival. This award is given out annually to only three band directors throughout the state of Iowa.
The Phillip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award is given in memory of Mr. Phillip Sehmann, who had a highly distinguished career as Director of Bands at Crestwood Community Schools. The individuals who are recognized display the qualities of excellence, dedication, and commitment to the value of instrumental music education in our schools. This award is considered the highest honor bestowed on NEIBA members.
The heartiest of congratulations to both Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Vander Weil, and thank you for your commitment to the students and staff at MHS.
