Kevin Hahn's Emoji with the text, "Telling our Story" - Vernon Middle School

Teachers at VMS have been working throughout the school year to enhance their lessons by applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Teaching staff across the district have participated in professional learning activities that have provided opportunities for professional growth to better understand the concepts of UDL, and use those strategies to more effectively meet the needs of diverse learners. UDL emphasizes providing multiple means of student engagement, representation, and expression. Vernon teachers have embraced these ideas and applied these concepts to the design of their lesson plans to create more inclusive and flexible classrooms.

Vernon’s Instructional Coach, Kevin Hahn, has visited classrooms throughout the school year to view these practices in action. These teaching strategies have supported students with differing learning needs, as well as increased student motivation and participation. Teachers are continuing to anticipate and address potential student learning barriers as they become more adept at including the concepts of UDL in their lesson design process. The images shared provide a look into our VMS classrooms to see how teachers are applying these concepts within a variety of academic subjects!
